Folklore, Tradition & Etymology

Pelargonium graveolens, affectionately known as Rose Geranium or Sweet-Scented Geranium, traces its botanical name to the Greek pelargos (stork), inspired by the long, beak-like seed pods resembling the bird’s bill. Graveolens aptly describes its robust, rose-infused aroma that permeates gardens and apothecaries alike.

In the rich tapestry of UK herbal folklore, Rose Geranium bloomed in Victorian cottage gardens, where its fragrant leaves were strewn across floors to purify air and lift spirits during damp winters. Traditional healers revered it as a ‘lady’s herb,’ weaving it into posies for women’s well-being and emotional solace, believing its rosy essence supported emotional equilibrium and invited gentle renewal. Whispers in old herbals tell of its use in love charms and protective sachets, symbolising comfort amidst life’s tempests, while its fragrant aura brought comfort in foggy climes.

A Heritage of Well-being

Rooted in South Africa’s verdant hills yet tenderly adopted into the heart of traditional UK herbalism, Rose Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) has graced English herb gardens since the 18th century. Victorian apothecaries and herbalists like those chronicled in Mrs Grieve’s Modern Herbal championed its tinctures for radiant skin, comfortable breathing, and inner balance, harnessing its citronellol and geraniol-rich compounds to maintain natural equilibrium against everyday irritants and unease.

Our ethically sourced Rose Geranium tincture—organic herb in 25% alcohol (1:2 w/v)—honours this legacy, blending ancient wisdom with modern purity to support respiratory comfort, skin harmony, and emotional equilibrium in today’s world.
