Folklore, Tradition & Etymology

Milk Thistle, known scientifically as Silybum marianum, derives its name from ancient lore intertwined with Christian legend. The ‘marianum’ honours the Virgin Mary, with folklore claiming that drops of her breast milk fell upon the plant’s leaves during nursing the infant Jesus, etching the distinctive white veins that mar its spiny foliage—hence its moniker ‘Blessed Milk Thistle’ or ‘Marian Thistle’.

In British herbal traditions, Milk Thistle has been a revered guardian since medieval times. Monastic herbalists cultivated it in monastery gardens, valuing its protective virtues. Nicholas Culpeper, the 17th-century English herbalist, extolled its sovereign qualities for the liver in his Complete Herbal, aligning it with the planet Mercury and its affinity for cleansing vital humours. Folklore also whispered of its apotropaic powers, carried as an amulet to ward off witchcraft and venomous beasts, embodying resilience amid adversity.

A Heritage of Well-being

Rooted deeply in UK herbal heritage, Silybum marianum has supported liver well-being for centuries, from ancient apothecaries to the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia. Traditional healers harnessed its seeds’ silymarin-rich essence to maintain natural balance and equilibrium, a practice echoed in our premium tincture.
