Folklore, Tradition & Etymology

In the ancient villages of India, Azadirachta indica – revered as Neem, the ‘Village Pharmacy’ – has stood as a sentinel of health for over 4,000 years. Rooted in Ayurvedic lore, its name derives from the Sanskrit nimba, meaning ‘bestower of good health’, while ‘Azadirachta’ echoes Persian tales of the ‘noble tree’ (aza-dirakht-i-Hind or ‘free tree of India’). Folklore whispers of Neem’s protective spirit: branches planted near homes to ward off evil spirits and epidemics, leaves scattered during weddings for ritual purification, and tender twigs chewed as nature’s toothbrush for pristine oral freshness. Legends from the Vedas portray it as a divine gift from the gods, its bitter leaves symbolising life’s trials that yield profound well-being.
