Folklore, Tradition & Etymology
Elecampane, or Inula helenium, weaves a rich tapestry through Britain’s herbal heritage, its towering yellow blooms evoking the sunflower’s ancient lineage. Known as ‘Horseheal’ for its legendary use in horse care—hence its favour among stable hands—’Elf Dock’ whispers of mystical woodland lore, where elves were said to find comfort with its roots. ‘Yellow Starwort’ nods to its star-shaped flowers, a beacon in medieval herbals like those of Culpeper, who praised it for lung support. Valued in Anglo-Saxon traditions and Grimoire lore, elecampane was carried as an amulet against evil spirits and plague, its warm, aromatic roots brewed into ales for winter well-being during foggy winters.
A Heritage of Well-being
For centuries, British herbalists have turned to elecampane’s robust roots to support respiratory well-being, from the damp moors of Devon to the misty highlands. In traditional UK apothecaries, it featured in syrups and tinctures—a tradition noted in the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia. Our expertly crafted tincture, extracted at 1:3 w/v in 25% ethanol from premium Inula helenium, honours this legacy, delivering its alantolactone and inulin to maintain natural respiratory balance. A golden thread in our island’s herbal story, it’s the natural ally for seasonal well-being and winter comfort.
