Folklore, Tradition & Etymology
Myrrh, derived from the aromatic resin of Commiphora myrrha, holds a hallowed place in human history, its bitter-sweet essence woven into the tapestry of ancient civilisations. The name ‘myrrh’ traces back to the Arabic murr, meaning ‘bitter’, echoing its pungent taste, while the Greek myrrha immortalised it in classical texts. Revered in ancient Egypt as a sacred gum for mummification and perfumery—blended with frankincense in temple rituals—it was prized by pharaohs for its purifying qualities.
Biblical lore elevates myrrh as one of the three gifts offered by the Magi to the infant Jesus, symbolising suffering and death, yet also well-being and vitality. In Arabian and Somali traditions, where wild-harvested Commiphora myrrha thrives in arid East African landscapes, it was a cornerstone of trade along the Incense Route, used by healers to support comfort for gums and digestion. Medieval European herbalists, drawing from Dioscorides and Avicenna, hailed it as a ‘balm of Gilead’, embedding it in apothecary lore to maintain natural balance.
A Heritage of Well-being
From the sun-baked groves of East Africa, our ethically sourced Commiphora myrrha resin is transformed in the UK into a premium tincture, bridging millennia-old wisdom with contemporary vitality.
